As human beings, we are all vulnerable. Engaging in the world on a daily basis can exacerbate our stressors and increase our needs for support. At HCAS, we are committed to improving the public's knowledge of mental health and supporting people's ability to provide support to others in times of crisis.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

Mental Health First Aid trains individuals to be able to provide potentially life-saving support to individuals experiencing a mental health or substance abuse challenge. The aim is to make mental health support as important and available as CPR.

As human beings, we are all vulnerable. Engaging in the world on a daily basis can exacerbate our stressors and increase our needs for support. At HCAS, we are committed to improving the public's knowledge of mental health and supporting people's ability to provide support to others in times of crisis. To that end, Mental Health First Aid trains individuals to be able to provide potentially life-saving support to individuals experiencing a mental health or substance abuse challenge. The aim is to make mental health support as important and available as CPR.

This 8-hour training teaches a 5-step action plan to help loved ones, colleagues, neighbors and others cope with mental health or substance use problems. Similar to traditional First Aid and CPR, Mental Health First Aid is help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis until professional treatment is obtained or the crisis resolves.

Mental Health First Aid certification teaches participants to:

  1. Assess the risk factors and warning signs of mental health and substance abuse problems

  2. Understanding information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, and substance abuse

  3. 5-Step action plan to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or is in crisis

  4. Share available evidence based professional, peer and self-help resources

Certification is not a substitution for mental health support. Certification enables individuals and communities to identify a mental health crisis and offer support until the appropriate treatment is provided.
